Furnaceville Rural Cemetery



Furnaceville Rural Cemetery Association, Inc. is located at 2280 Trimble Road,. It is a 43 acre suburban cemetery east of Bear Creek and south of Trimble Road in the Town of Ontario, County of Wayne, State of New York. Presently, about 15 acres are being utilized. It is a not for profit, non sectarian cemetery operating under the regulations of the New York State Department of State, Division of Cemeteries. It was originally incorporated in 1884 and has over 3000 interments. Some of the gravestones date back to the early 1800’s including a Revolutionary War soldier. The earliest recorded burial was in 1823.



Operations



The cemetery is governed by the, all volunteer, Board of Trustees, which meets annually in January as required by the New York State Department of State, Division of Cemeteries. This meeting is advertised in the Wayne County Mail a week or so prior to the meeting. At that time, officers and trustees for the coming year are elected, appointments are made and old and new business is discussed.

The operation of the cemetery depends almost entirely on these individuals who volunteer their time, talents, and financial support to keep the cemetery active.

CEMETERY MAINTENANCE

Lawn care forr the cemetery is contracted out to Compton Landscape. Since there may be difficulty in grave opening in the winter, the Board of Trustees in 1963, built a masonry structure to house caskets for spring burial and in a separate room, to provide space for storage of lawnmowers and equipment.


GRAVE OPENINGS AND CLOSINGS

Doyle Excavating provides grave opening and closing services for users of Furnaceville Cemetery. The funeral director, plat keeper, and Doyle Excavating coordinate the date and time for grave openings and closings.

Current prices for grave opening and closing are: Weekdays: $650, Cremation $400. A $100 surcharge for weekends and holidays, payable to Doyle Excavating, (315 589-8426 or 585 370-7288 for excavations) Due to the difficulty of winter burials, there may be additional fees for snowplowing, repairs to adjacent graves, etc. The funeral director should advise his client if a winter or spring burial is preferred. Lot Sales & Burials



Tobin Annex (East section) (many graves available) $800 per grave, effective as of 2/1/2024.

Purchase of grave site is mandatory prior to interment and is payable to the Furnaceville Rural Cemetery Assoc. Inc. and sent to P.O. Box 72, Ontario, NY 14519, or given to the Plat keeper at the time of grave selection.

Additionally, at the time of burial, there is an interment fee of $400 for full burials and $300 for cremains These fees are due at the time of an interment and be made payable to Furnaceville Rural Cemetery Assoc. Inc. and sent to P.O. Box 72, Ontario, NY 14519, or given to the Plat keeper at the time of interment

Rules and Regulations of
Furnaceville Cemetery


In order to maintain the beauty and quiet nature at Furnaceville, it is necessary for lot owners and those who visit the cemetery, to respect certain rules. As a lot owner, we ask your help in observing them.


  1. Drive only in the designated roadways and park on the east/west drives so that traffic can be maintained.
  2. Glass, ceramic and porcelain items (including vases and bottles) may not be placed on graves or sites.
  3. Potted and planted flowers are to be no more than 8 inches from the stone and should not interfere with headstone inscriptions. No perennials should be planted, just annuals.
  4. Shrubs bushes or trees are not to be planted on lots.
  5. All lots are to remain seeded with grass.
  6. Foundations for stones are to be installed only by cemetery personnel or authorized cemetery contractors.
  7. Grave markers of monuments are to conform with existing monuments.
  8. A maximum of two cremains are permitted on each grave or one full burial and one cremains. Burial of cremains must be applied for through the plat keeper who will arrange for excavation.
  9. Snowmobiles, horses, off-road-motorcycles, and ATV’S are prohibited in the cemetery.
  10. No alcoholic beverages or glass bottles are allowed in the cemetery.
  11. Do not overload lots and stones with items such as: toys, balloons, wind chimes or other memorabilia that might make the lot look gaudy or interfere with lawn mowing of the cemetery.
  12. No artificial flowers, statues or images allowed on graves.
  13. No fencing, decorative landscaping stones or mulch allowed on lots.
  14. No shepherd's hooks or hanging baskets.
  15. Spring, summer, fall decorations should be removed by October 15 and winter decorations and wreaths should be removed by April 1.
  16. The Board of Trustees shall have sole discretion as to all matters regarding landscaping and plantings. We may remove or alter unauthorized plantings, fences, stones and mulch. We reserve the right to remove all flowers, wreaths or other natural decorations without notice as soon as they become unsightly or left on the grave after noted removal date. (see #15)
  17. All grave openings are to be performed by either cemetery personnel or authorized cemetery contractors.

THESE RULES MAY BE REVISED AND OR AMENDED BY THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES AT ANY TIME WITHOUT NOTIFICATION.
